Google Cloud outage disrupts Revolut, Lloyds and HSBC banking services in UK

Google Cloud outage disrupts Revolut, Lloyds and HSBC banking services in UK

A power outage at a Google Cloud data centre near London has disrupted banking services and affected several businesses across the United Kingdom.

The US technology company confirmed the incident in a service update on Tuesday, attributing the disruption to a power-related problem at its London data centre.

Google said the outage began at 6:08 a.m. GMT, with multiple services experiencing elevated error rates and intermittent network failures in its europe-west2 region. The company initially projected that full recovery would be achieved by around 1 p.m. GMT.

The disruption affected digital bank Revolut, with customers reportedly experiencing problems with ATM withdrawals, bank transfers and card top-ups. A source close to the matter attributed the issues to the Google Cloud outage.

UK lenders Lloyds and HSBC also confirmed that some customers were experiencing difficulties accessing their banking services.

Lloyds said it was aware that some customers were having problems with its mobile application and online banking, while HSBC acknowledged difficulties accessing its services and said it would continue monitoring the situation.

Revolut apologised to affected customers, saying it had been working to resolve the problem since it was identified.

“We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe,” a Revolut spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, internet service tracker Downdetector recorded hundreds of reports of disruptions affecting other businesses, including property website Rightmove and postal service Royal Mail.

The incident highlights the potential impact of disruptions to cloud infrastructure, which many financial institutions and other businesses rely on to deliver digital services.
